Introduction
The German word Bauernregel (f., literally, "farmers' rule") is variously defined as "country saying" or "folk saying/wisdom." Many of these sayings deal with weather prediction, since that has always been important for farmers (Bauern), but they also can offer general advice. Such folk sayings are popular in German. Because of their deceptively simple nature, they are also frequently the object of parody. ("Kräht der Hahn am Mist, ändert sich's Wetter oder es bleibt wie's ist." = "If the rooster crows on the manure pile, the weather will change or stay as it is.") But Bauernregeln are a humorous, good source of German vocabulary.

The morning gray, the evening red,
means good weather.
Der Nebel, wenn er steigend sich erhält,

Fog brings rain when it rises,
but clear weather when it falls.
Der Nordwind ist ein rauher Vetter,

Die Kartoffel sagt:

The potato says:

If twice rotates the weather vane,
it's indicating wind and rain.
