Der kanadische Bergbauingenieur und Offizier Peter Norman Nissen erhielt 1916 von der britischen Regierung den Auftrag, eine Unterkunft für Soldaten zu entwickeln, die von vier Leuten binnen vier Stunden errichtet werden konnte. Das Ergebnis war die Nissenhütte aus Wellblech.
In 1916 the Canadian mining engineer and officer Peter Norman Nissen was given the assignment by the British government to develop a shelter for soldiers that could be erected by four people within four hours. The result was the Nissen (Quonset) hut made of corrugated iron.
(The American name for the "Nissen hut" comes from the first U.S. site of their manufacture during World War II, Quonset Point, Rhode Island.)
