The Vienna-born American anesthesiologist Peter Safar* scientifically established the effectiveness of cardiopulmonary resuscitation in 1958.

*Note: The Austrian-born Peter Safar (1924-2003) studied medicine in Vienna before moving to the U.S. in 1950. The "father of CPR" taught anesthesiology at the Univ. of Pittsburgh, and did pioneering research on breathing and resuscitation. In 1958 he established the first ICU (die Intensivstation, ITS) in the U.S. (Baltimore). He was nominated three times for the Nobel Prize in medicine.
