'Harry Potter' in German: Audio

AUDIOBOOKS > Page 1, 2, 3, Lexikon, Links

Harry Potter 1 Audiobook One of the attractions of the German Harry Potter books is the audio. Narrator Rufus Beck has won praise for his lively reading of the Potter books in German.

The German audiobook edition of "Harry
Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone."

Here's what one German reader/listener said about the "Harry Potter" Hörbücher (audiobooks) and the German narrator: "...Rufus Beck macht dieses Erlebnis zum reinen Vergnügen. Durch seine virtuose Modulation jedes einzelnen Charakters, insbesondere Dobby, erscheint die Lesung fast dreidimensional, man spürt förmlich die feinen Spuckesprüher, die Dobby absondert! Also, kaufen, hören, genießen!" (Leserrezension, Amazon.de).

Our reader in New York also found the Harry Potter audio cassettes enjoyable and helpful:

Repetition is important. Thank goodness Harry Potter is such a fun read that you'll want to read and listen over and over. So far I've listened to three of the six tapes and I'm eager to see whether each succeeding tape becomes easier to understand at first playing.

Listening over and over is important. If your grandchildren take Suzuki music lessons, they will listen over and over again to their music tapes. In the car, in the house, while playing with toys, before bed they will listen. They will absorb the correct dynamics and tempo. It will pay off in their performance. Just as the repetition of the 'Harry Potter' tapes has made my speech in German class somewhat less stilted and hesitant."

Besides the books and the audio tapes themselves, there are many Hogwarts extras (Harry attends the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry) that make the Harry Potter series (Rowlings promises a total of at least seven Potter books) ideal for German-learners. Because the Harry Potter phenomenon is worldwide, there are many Web sites devoted to the topic – both for Muggles (regular people) and wizards.

You can read about Autorin Joanne K. Rowlings in German at the official Harry Potter Web site. It also offers chat and a forum for young Potter fans, as well as sample book chapters. Among the many German fan sites, I think the previously mentioned German fan club site by two Berlinerinnen is the best. It has a multilingual glossary of Harry Potter vocabulary (Eule = owl [also "email"]; Zauberstab = magic wand), plus references and pages related to various key terms. But there are also other above-average Harry Potter Web sites in German. We include links to those site, the official site and more on our special Harry Potter links page.

Viel Spaß beim Lesen!
